Ignorance Is Brief

By Mike Speidel

Our society is fascinating, specifically in the ways it constantly learns and evolves. All you have to do is take a peek back into recent history to realize that we don't know everything. To wit, in the last 100 years smoking was encouraged, we cooked with lard, and we elected President Jimmy Carter into office... We didn't know!

    Ignorance is bliss.

But the present is different in that the pace of discovery has accelerated. We are so inundated with news and scientific developments it seems what you're doing today will undoubtedly be warned against tomorrow. Combine that with the ease in which we disseminate information, not knowing is hard to pull off these days.

    Ignorance is brief.

So I'm surprised when we consult with airports of all sizes who are unaware that they are "behind the times" for lack of a better expression. Whether it's lack of knowledge or inattention to detail, there's no excuse for markings being neglected. Afterall, there's more shared information at your fingertips these days than ever before.

One of the benefits of the forum-style Airfield Marking Symposium is to hear how other airports are addressing challenges and how you stack up with the rest of the industry. This year offers four more training opportunities to network and share information with your counterparts and put it to good use. Even if you have attended in the past, the Symposium evolves each year with new insight and technology. I invite you to visit sightline.us and join us for the workshop in 2013.
