Mission: Possible

By Mike Speidel

That's right, mission: possible. No explosions, helicopters flying through railway tunnels, motorcycle stunt jumps, or guest-star appearances by Peter Graves or Tom Cruise! I did lobby for special effects - like maybe the webletter self-destructing once you finished reading it, however the budget was tight, and I didn't know how many of you had fire extinguishers nearby. Besides, the missions mentioned here are all very possible.

Every state in the Nation has a Department of Transportation. Usually the DOT's are segmented into divisions and one is typically created for state aviation/aeronautics. Each one of those divisions has a mission statement. Within most of those missions is the word "safe" or "safety."

For example, California's mission in aviation is "to foster and promote the development of a safe, efficient, dependable, and environmentally compatible air transportation system."

Texas's mission is "to work cooperatively to provide safe, effective and efficient movement of people and goods."

Massachusetts strives to "promote aviation while establishing and maintaining a safe, efficient airport system to meet the current and future air transportation and economic needs of the Commonwealth."

These state aviation mission statements, among others, all use keywords like safety, efficient, and effective. These ideals can also be found in Sightline's mission statement. Application procedures can be refined to produce superior markings creating safer, more cost-effective, efficient marking systems.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to re-evaluate your current marking procedures and operations. Having just completed the Airfield Marking Handbook we have determined marking quality everywhere must be improved to achieve state aviation safety goals. Sightline's consultants are equipped with the expertise to maximize marking effectiveness, efficiency, and safety - perhaps even Peter Graves would find that mission: impossible.
